“Best customer service ever. I hired them for my great aunts funeral and made sure they had a list of people who could not come in. People who weren’t suppose to be there still decided to show up and the security handled it discreetly and …”

GoldnBear was founded in Los Angeles by veterans who identified homelessness as one of the city's central security challenges. Rather than treating shelters as places to be policed, we immersed ourselves in the issue, analyzed each incident and built proactive strategies to prevent the next one. Today our preventative methods are integral to numerous major transitional housing facilities across Los Angeles. This is the service where our approach was developed, and the one where it makes the most visible difference.

Understanding human behavior and sociology is key to creating a security system that organically prevents most incidents. Residents of shelters and transitional housing are often dealing with trauma, mental illness, addiction, grief and the stress of having lost everything. A guard who responds to that with commands and authority will provoke exactly the outbursts they are trying to prevent. Our guards are trained by social workers on our own team to recognize crisis behavior, lower their voice and posture, give people space and choices, and intervene early with respect. Most incidents never happen as a result.

Prevention does not mean passivity. Our teams maintain clear boundaries, enforce facility rules consistently and respond to crises with a calm, strategic response that resolves situations quickly and keeps them from turning into larger problems. We handle intake screening, contraband and weapons procedures, visitor control, overnight presence, conflicts between residents, and coordination with case managers and clinical staff. When a situation does require emergency services, our guards know how to make that call in a way that keeps everyone as safe as possible.

We work with nonprofit operators, county and city programs, faith-based shelters, supportive housing developers and low-income housing property managers across Los Angeles County. Guards assigned to these facilities are chosen specifically for the role and receive additional training in mental health awareness, trauma-informed communication and overdose response. Coverage is available 24/7, and we build post orders together with facility leadership so that security supports the program's goals rather than working against them.

FAQ

Shelter Security: your questions

The population is different, so the approach must be. Residents are often in crisis, and a traditional command-and-control guard triggers the very incidents you want to avoid. Our guards are trained by social workers on our team to read distress early, communicate with respect, offer choices and hold boundaries without humiliation. They also understand the program: intake rules, curfews, visitor policies and when to loop in clinical staff. That combination is why major Los Angeles facilities rely on us.
